Dawn Danko In the News – Parents Fear Losing Neighbourhood Community Schools

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

As the election on October 27th looms closer, I have been thinking back over the past year when I became involved with the battle to save our local community schools from closing.

While my community was ultimately successful in saving our local school (after a sustained ten month long campaign), I can’t help but think about how different the end result might have been with different leadership at the Board.

I recently came across this article from October 2013 where speaking about quality of information the public is provided with,  I am quoted as saying:

“That’s why we’re all questioning the data that they’re presenting to us,”

I think that one statement perhaps captures the biggest asset that I believe I can bring to the board if elected trustee – I have the experience and educational background necessary to question the data that policy decisions are based on – and the will to seek out and listen to the grass roots opinions of our valuable community members when they ask questions.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

Dawn Danko In The News – Hamilton Community News Column – Time To End Board’s Patronizing Attitude

 Dear Friends in Ward 7:

In my recent column in the Hamilton Community News, I used the opportunity to discuss the core values that I believe I can bring to the public school board if elected as Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee on October 27th, 2014.

My column was inspired by a quote from Thomas Jefferson who said:

I was bold in the pursuit of knowledge, never fearing to follow truth and reason to whatever results they led.

To me, this is the essential quality that I would like to bring to the public school board – along with the real world experience needed to be an effective trustee.

We cannot continue on the current path of setting board policy based on ideology and a vague idea of “we know whats best for you”.

From my column:

Parent involvement in the school system is critical to ensure that local issues are considered at the board level. The current top-down “we know best” decision-making process does not value input from the talented and experienced parents, teachers, city partners and community members, and is a trend that does not serve our students well.

With a taxpayer-funded annual budget of over $500 million, the elected board of trustees must ensure the entire Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is transparent and accountable.

Dawn Danko In The News – Danko Wants To Fix Severely Flawed School Arcs

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

In a recent interview with Hamilton Community News writer Richard Leitner, I had the opportunity to discuss why I am running for Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee.

In addition to my position that the current school closure review process needs a complete overhaul from the ground up, I think that it is also important to point out that being a public school trustee is also about making sure that our valuable tax dollars are spent wisely in the classroom.

From the article:

Danko said her background – she has a Master’s degree in education, teaches radiation therapy at Mohawk College and runs a commercial photography business with her husband – will make her a strong voice for Ward 7.

She said it will also be useful on 21st Century learning, including the introduction of iPads in grades 4 to 12 over the next five years, a plan she feels requires great care.

The board needs to ensure, for instance, that teachers have the necessary training for blended learning and that the iPads don’t just become a way for students to access social media like Facebook, she said.

“The other risk is that you just end up offloading some of the in-classroom work for students to do independently,” she said. “That works for some students, but for a lot of students, they really need that mentoring in the classroom.”

Preparing Students for a Successful Future

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

These kids today…

This is often the first thing that you will hear from business owners and employers when asked about how the public education system can better prepare students for the future.

Businesses want to hire well educated, motivated, hard working critical thinkers – but business owners tell me that finding new graduates with those qualities can be very difficult.

Instead, I hear all kinds of complaints that we are graduating students with an over inflated sense of entitlement and an unwillingness to start at an entry level position and work up the ladder.

As we move towards an increasingly globalized economy, we are not doing our students any favours by perpetuating the illusion that you can be successful without hard work.

In the following article, I will share some of my ideas for how we could better prepare our students for a successful future.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

Photos from the Bright Run 2014 – Breast Cancer Research In Greater Hamilton Today

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

I recently took some time out from campaigning to volunteer at the 2014 BRIGHT Run.

Cancer touches so many in our society and as a medical radiation therapist I spent years being inspired by the courage of those facing this horrible disease.

In particular, I support the BRIGHT Run because it raises money for cancer research right here in Hamilton.

I ran the photo booth with one of my former students Alisha Jewell, so I thought it would be fun to post some of the photos from the BRIGHT Run here (see below).

Please leave a message if you see yourself and would like me to email you a copy of your photo (if you don’t already have it).

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

The Role Of Teachers In Public Education

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

Before I started teaching in the classroom (I am a Professor of Medical Radiation Sciences at the college level), I never really understood the level of commitment and talent required to be an effective teacher.

And I certainly didn’t appreciate the workload teachers face every day!

From preparing lessons, to grading, to dealing with student issues – not to mention the amount of time it takes to familiarize one’s self with new curriculum – which seems to be constantly evolving.

That is to say, I have a strong respect for our Public School teachers.

Please read my article below that outlines a few of the challenges I see facing teachers in the classroom over the next few years and how I believe they can be addressed.

Sincerely,
