Dawn Danko Proposes Giving Parents The Freedom To Choose Where Their Children Attend School

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

Knocking on doors and speaking to parents across the Central Mountain, one of the most common concerns that I have heard is school boundaries.

As it stands now, children are forced to attend a specific school depending on where they live and what the school boundaries are.

The idea that the Board can unilaterally define school boundaries and force a child to attend one school or another just seems so authoritarian and outdated to modern parents.

Instead, I believe that parents should have the freedom to send their child to either their home school, or to any other school they choose.

If elected Trustee, I will work to implement a three year pilot program that would allow parents the freedom to choose which school their children attend.

Please read the details of my proposal below.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

Dawn Danko In the News – Parents Fear Losing Neighbourhood Community Schools

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

As the election on October 27th looms closer, I have been thinking back over the past year when I became involved with the battle to save our local community schools from closing.

While my community was ultimately successful in saving our local school (after a sustained ten month long campaign), I can’t help but think about how different the end result might have been with different leadership at the Board.

I recently came across this article from October 2013 where speaking about quality of information the public is provided with,  I am quoted as saying:

“That’s why we’re all questioning the data that they’re presenting to us,”

I think that one statement perhaps captures the biggest asset that I believe I can bring to the board if elected trustee – I have the experience and educational background necessary to question the data that policy decisions are based on – and the will to seek out and listen to the grass roots opinions of our valuable community members when they ask questions.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko In The News – Hamilton Community News Column – Time To End Board’s Patronizing Attitude

 Dear Friends in Ward 7:

In my recent column in the Hamilton Community News, I used the opportunity to discuss the core values that I believe I can bring to the public school board if elected as Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee on October 27th, 2014.

My column was inspired by a quote from Thomas Jefferson who said:

I was bold in the pursuit of knowledge, never fearing to follow truth and reason to whatever results they led.

To me, this is the essential quality that I would like to bring to the public school board – along with the real world experience needed to be an effective trustee.

We cannot continue on the current path of setting board policy based on ideology and a vague idea of “we know whats best for you”.

From my column:

Parent involvement in the school system is critical to ensure that local issues are considered at the board level. The current top-down “we know best” decision-making process does not value input from the talented and experienced parents, teachers, city partners and community members, and is a trend that does not serve our students well.

With a taxpayer-funded annual budget of over $500 million, the elected board of trustees must ensure the entire Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is transparent and accountable.

HWDSB Underestimates Kindergarten Enrollment – Dawn Danko

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

The HWDSB Interim Budget Financial Report confirms that 161.5 more JK-3 students enrolled in 2013/14 than projected – and here is the reason: “primarily due to growth in full day kindergarten.”

Dawn Danko Discusses School Closures and Her Approach To Problem Solving

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

School closures have been a difficult and controversial topic on the Central Mountain over the last few years.

Our neighbourhoods have been decimated by the surprise loss of Hill Park Secondary school.

We are also facing further upheaval as a result of the recent elementary school closure decisions.

At the close of the Central Mountain elementary school review, I presented a delegation to the current HWDSB Trustees that outlined what I think is a new and modern approach to problem solving that has been absent at the Board level for some time.

Please watch the video below for more information and please leave a comment to share your thoughts.
