Trustee Dawn Danko Hamilton Central Mountain Ward 7 Public School Trustee 2014 Municipal Election HWDSB

Dawn Danko In The News – Hamilton Community News Column – Time To End Board’s Patronizing Attitude

 Dear Friends in Ward 7:

In my recent column in the Hamilton Community News, I used the opportunity to discuss the core values that I believe I can bring to the public school board if elected as Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee on October 27th, 2014.

My column was inspired by a quote from Thomas Jefferson who said:

I was bold in the pursuit of knowledge, never fearing to follow truth and reason to whatever results they led.

To me, this is the essential quality that I would like to bring to the public school board – along with the real world experience needed to be an effective trustee.

We cannot continue on the current path of setting board policy based on ideology and a vague idea of “we know whats best for you”.

From my column:

Parent involvement in the school system is critical to ensure that local issues are considered at the board level. The current top-down “we know best” decision-making process does not value input from the talented and experienced parents, teachers, city partners and community members, and is a trend that does not serve our students well.

With a taxpayer-funded annual budget of over $500 million, the elected board of trustees must ensure the entire Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is transparent and accountable.

I was at the meeting at Sherwood High School on October 7 to check out the candidates for trustee for ward 7. I was impressed with Dawn Danko.  I had read what she had written in the Mountain News and saw the election signs in our neighbourhood, but otherwise knew nothing about her.  She was challenged twice during the meeting, but she didn’t back down from the issues.  She was able to explain her position in a concise, professional and confident manner.  I see her as someone who wouldn’t back down from difficult issues and would fight for what she is passionate about for the families and schools in ward 7.  She has my vote for trustee.

Kids today don't know how to think for themselves and think they deserve everything. I'm voting for Dawn because she will bring some reality back to education.

There are too many Trustees that get elected on single issue activist agendas. We need someone like Dawn who is fair to everyone.

This is the first time I've had a sign for any election, ever.  Gotta show my support!  Good for you for standing up for what you believe in.
