Dawn Danko In The News – Busing Should Be Extended To All MacNab Students

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

If I have learned anything during my campaign for Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee, it is how important it is to listen to parents when they identify an issue with their child’s education.

A recent example that was pointed out to me while talking to parents at the door is the dreadful situation facing Armstrong students and many other students across the central mountain who now face a daily HSR bus commute of over two hours.

From my comments in a recent story in the Hamilton Community News:

According to the school board, transportation costs are nothing compared to the cost of keeping schools open, so we need to find the money to meet the needs of our students,” said Danko.

“The school board made this mess when they made their high school decisions. They need to be responsible for the students affected.”

“Certainly we must have capacity in our high schools that can deal with a shift in boundaries of a block or two.”

Dawn Danko In The News – Danko Wants To Fix Severely Flawed School Arcs

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

In a recent interview with Hamilton Community News writer Richard Leitner, I had the opportunity to discuss why I am running for Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee.

In addition to my position that the current school closure review process needs a complete overhaul from the ground up, I think that it is also important to point out that being a public school trustee is also about making sure that our valuable tax dollars are spent wisely in the classroom.

From the article:

Danko said her background – she has a Master’s degree in education, teaches radiation therapy at Mohawk College and runs a commercial photography business with her husband – will make her a strong voice for Ward 7.

She said it will also be useful on 21st Century learning, including the introduction of iPads in grades 4 to 12 over the next five years, a plan she feels requires great care.

The board needs to ensure, for instance, that teachers have the necessary training for blended learning and that the iPads don’t just become a way for students to access social media like Facebook, she said.

“The other risk is that you just end up offloading some of the in-classroom work for students to do independently,” she said. “That works for some students, but for a lot of students, they really need that mentoring in the classroom.”
