Dawn Danko Hamilton Spectator – In the News – Schools The Heart of a Neighbourhood

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

School closures have been the dominant topic of discussion during the campaign for Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee.

In my recent opinion piece in the Hamilton Spectator, I touch on the ongoing issues created by school closures in our communities, but I also wanted to highlight some of the very positive changes that I would work for in public education if elected.

You can read the piece here:

Dawn Danko Hamilton Spectator – Schools The Heart of a Neighbourhood

Here are a few excerpts:

Despite the challenges, I am still excited about opportunities for public education in Hamilton.

For me, the question has changed from “Which schools will close?” to “How do we prevent this from happening again?”

…when I look at my children’s school and others, I see excellent education from quality teachers, a strong parent community and passionate neighbourhoods.

There is challenging work ahead: facilitating upcoming transitions for students; managing transportation issues created by boundary changes; ensuring positive and inclusive learning environments; effectively incorporating new technologies (such as iPads) into the classroom.

I am running for Ward 7 public school board trustee because I see wonderful new opportunities for public education in Hamilton.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

Dawn Danko Trustee Debate – Hamilton Mountain Candidates

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

All Hamilton Mountain trustee candidates were recently invited to participate in an all candidates debate at Sherwood Secondary School.

I have included five video segments from the evening’s debate below.

One issue that stood out for me is the friction that still exists in our Hamilton Central Mountain communities as a result of recent school closures – I was very happy for the opportunity to explain my thoughts.

If elected Trustee, one of my key goals is to make sure that no community ever has to go through this divisive process again.  I have already been working behind the scenes to make changes to the ARC process, and I will continue working towards further changes if elected.

If you have the time to watch the video, I would be interested in your feedback – please leave a comment below!

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

Updating Our Educational Environment With Greenspace and Outdoor Classrooms

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

One of the key planks in my election platform is a focus on upgrading the educational environment at our local schools.

I will hold the board accountable for their promises to upgrade the physical condition of our schools – but for me that is just a start.

My vision includes improvements to both the indoor and outdoor educational environment with projects that replace asphalt with landscaped greenspace, outdoor play amenities, outdoor classrooms and community gardens.

The recent conversion of 1,300 square feet of pavement at St. Margaret Mary elementary school is a perfect example of what can be done with a minimal budget.

If elected Trustee for Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain, I will work to make sure that the Public School Board leads the way when it comes to both the indoor and outdoor educational environment we offer to our students.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

Dawn Danko On Walking To School

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

The ability to walk to school is a fundamental right that should be enjoyed by all children on the Central Mountain.

However, by closing walkable community schools and building large big-box schools, the Public School Board has been on a path that leaves parents no option but to drive their kids to school.

This is not healthy for our students, and it is not healthy for our society.

Please read my thoughts on the importance of walking to school below.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko In The News – Busing Should Be Extended To All MacNab Students

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

If I have learned anything during my campaign for Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee, it is how important it is to listen to parents when they identify an issue with their child’s education.

A recent example that was pointed out to me while talking to parents at the door is the dreadful situation facing Armstrong students and many other students across the central mountain who now face a daily HSR bus commute of over two hours.

From my comments in a recent story in the Hamilton Community News:

According to the school board, transportation costs are nothing compared to the cost of keeping schools open, so we need to find the money to meet the needs of our students,” said Danko.

“The school board made this mess when they made their high school decisions. They need to be responsible for the students affected.”

“Certainly we must have capacity in our high schools that can deal with a shift in boundaries of a block or two.”

Dawn Danko Proposes Giving Parents The Freedom To Choose Where Their Children Attend School

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

Knocking on doors and speaking to parents across the Central Mountain, one of the most common concerns that I have heard is school boundaries.

As it stands now, children are forced to attend a specific school depending on where they live and what the school boundaries are.

The idea that the Board can unilaterally define school boundaries and force a child to attend one school or another just seems so authoritarian and outdated to modern parents.

Instead, I believe that parents should have the freedom to send their child to either their home school, or to any other school they choose.

If elected Trustee, I will work to implement a three year pilot program that would allow parents the freedom to choose which school their children attend.

Please read the details of my proposal below.

Dawn Danko In the News – Parents Fear Losing Neighbourhood Community Schools

Dear Friends in Ward 7:

As the election on October 27th looms closer, I have been thinking back over the past year when I became involved with the battle to save our local community schools from closing.

While my community was ultimately successful in saving our local school (after a sustained ten month long campaign), I can’t help but think about how different the end result might have been with different leadership at the Board.

I recently came across this article from October 2013 where speaking about quality of information the public is provided with,  I am quoted as saying:

“That’s why we’re all questioning the data that they’re presenting to us,”

I think that one statement perhaps captures the biggest asset that I believe I can bring to the board if elected trustee – I have the experience and educational background necessary to question the data that policy decisions are based on – and the will to seek out and listen to the grass roots opinions of our valuable community members when they ask questions.

Sincerely,

Dawn Danko

Dawn Danko In The News – Hamilton Community News Column – Time To End Board’s Patronizing Attitude

 Dear Friends in Ward 7:

In my recent column in the Hamilton Community News, I used the opportunity to discuss the core values that I believe I can bring to the public school board if elected as Ward 7 – Hamilton Central Mountain Public School Trustee on October 27th, 2014.

My column was inspired by a quote from Thomas Jefferson who said:

I was bold in the pursuit of knowledge, never fearing to follow truth and reason to whatever results they led.

To me, this is the essential quality that I would like to bring to the public school board – along with the real world experience needed to be an effective trustee.

We cannot continue on the current path of setting board policy based on ideology and a vague idea of “we know whats best for you”.

From my column:

Parent involvement in the school system is critical to ensure that local issues are considered at the board level. The current top-down “we know best” decision-making process does not value input from the talented and experienced parents, teachers, city partners and community members, and is a trend that does not serve our students well.

With a taxpayer-funded annual budget of over $500 million, the elected board of trustees must ensure the entire Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is transparent and accountable.
